The 11th preliminary meeting of the International Human Rights Summit in the Eastern Approach was held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Baqir-ul-Ulum University in Qom Posted on:2025-02-11 The 11th Pre-Session of the International Human Rights Summit on the Eastern Approach was held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Baqir-ul-Ulum University in Qom. Title of the session: Islamic Human Rights Documents in a Broader Context in Human Rights Discourses Dr. Lise Lotte Abed, a professor at the University of Vienna, Austria, was the speaker of the conference. In her speech, she pointed out that during the twentieth century, Islamic human rights documents were issued as a result of conferences of Muslim scholars, and sometimes in exchange with European human rights experts, and at the initiative of various Muslim countries, and added: Overall, these documents have been welcomed internationally and some of them have been obtained as a result of intercultural and interreligious dialogue. The university professor continued her speech by explaining that on the one hand, international experts became aware of the rich heritage of Islam in terms of collective and individual rights, and on the other hand, the question was raised whether and to what extent the set of Islamic human rights - which is expressed within the framework of Sharia - can be in accordance with the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights? According to Dr. Abed, both Islamic scholars and Western human rights experts have studied the historical roots of human rights from their own perspectives and analyzed this issue, and an attempt has been made to extract the differences and points of commonality between the two discourses of Islam and the West in order to determine how these rights affect the legal status of individuals in Islamic societies, whether Eastern or Western. He went on to argue that the goal of such a scientific approach should be to ensure that people have access to certain rights and to guarantee these rights. The scientific secretary of this meeting was Dr. Fazeh Khataminia, Director of the English Language and Intercultural Studies Department at Baqir-ul-Ulum University. It is worth noting that the first international conference on human rights in the Eastern approach, organized by Baqir-ul-Ulum University in Qom in cooperation with the Islamic Culture and Communications Organization, will be held on May 28 and 29, 1404 in Tehran and Qom with the participation of international scholars.
